Winston-Salem Chronicle Covers Anniversary of Integration

James McCorkle ’66 and his experience 50 years ago as the first African-American student at Guilford were the subject of an article in the Winston-Salem Chronicle.

James spoke at a Sept. 25 event at Guilford to kick off a yearlong commemoration of  integration.

“It was a unique experience. I learned a number of things,” James said. “I guess I learned to be in an all-white environment on campus and in the classrooms as well. Sometimes, it was (lonely), but I made friends and I guess the longer I was there, the better it got.”

The Sept. 28 Beacon included an interview with James.
