Nominations Open for Stewart Community Service Award
February 15, 2013
Nominations are now being accepted in the President’s Office for the 2013 Bruce B. Stewart Awards named in honor of Bruce B. Stewart ’61.
The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Friday, March 15. Bruce Stewart served Guilford College as director of admissions, assistant professor of Education, assistant to the president, acting academic dean, provost, acting president, associate to the vice president for development, trustee, chair of the Board of Trustees, and currently trustee emeritus.
The Soles Family—Bill Soles’81 and Jan Soles Nelson ‘87—generously established and endowed these awards at $5,000 each. For 2011, the College will award three Bruce B. Stewart Awards: two Teaching awards for faculty and one Community Service Award for staff. President Kent Chabotar will present the three awards at the annual Spring Awards Ceremony on April 17. The criteria and other requirements regarding the community service award are detailed below.
Bruce B. Stewart Community Service Award
The Bruce B. Stewart Community Service Award is intended to recognize individuals for their contributions to the Guilford College Community at the highest level of excellence. Candidates should be nominated based on meritorious service that is beyond the duties normally assigned to their positions. For 2013, the award will be given to one staff member, either administrative (non-hourly) or support (hourly).
Criteria for the Bruce Stewart B. Community Service Award include: (1) specific contributions to the quality of community life at Guilford College, with preference to student life, (2) concrete outcomes of those contributions, and (3) demonstrated concern and respect for others.
Candidates must have a minimum of five years of consecutive full-time Guilford College employment.
Candidates must devote at least 50 percent of their time to administrative/staff duties per their official appointment with the College.
Nominations may be received from any member of the Guilford College community – students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni/alumnae, trustees, and visitors – that address each of the selection criteria.
The selection committee will consist of two students, one from CCE, one from traditional students, one hourly staff employee, one non-hourly staff employee, and if possible the award recipient(s) from the immediately prior year, with the chair being selected by the group. These selections will be made by the president. The respective employee/student groups will select committee members. The chair will forward the committee recommendation with rationale and an alternate to the president for final selection. Committee members should also nominate persons for these awards but must recuse themselves during any committee discussion of the nomination. This is the same process used for the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. It is also possible that the committee would recommend that no award be given in that year.
The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 15, 2013. Nominate only one candidate on each form you submit. The candidate information you provide can be supplemented by additional supporting documentation. Please return nomination forms to the Office of the President. The nomination form is available online.
