Billy Britt ’56 Book Signing Feb. 9
February 08, 2013
Billy M. Britt will sign copies of his latest book, “Giants in the Land: North Carolina Yearly Meeting Leaders,” 2:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in Hege Library.
The book tells the stories of 17 leaders of North Carolina Yearly Meeting, including many with Guilford connections — Mary Chawner Woody, Algie Newlin, Byron Haworth, Isaac Harris and Luby Casey, to name a few.
Sponsored by the Guilford College Friends of the Library and the Friends Historical Collection, the signing will be held in the Friends Historical Collection Research Room.
Billy, former superintendent of North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends, conducted research in the Friends Historical Collection for this book and for his 2007 work, “Self-Supported Ministers: Lest We Forget,” which contains over 40 short biographies of unpaid ministers who served Friends meetings in North Carolina from the early 19th into the 21st centuries.
Educated at Guilford, Billy received his bachelor of arts degree in 1956 and completed his master’s degree in religion in 1973. His wife, Viola, is also a Guilford graduate and he dedicated the book to her “in appreciation of her co-ministry.”
