Matt Grosso Takes Lacrosse Position at Southwestern (Texas)

Women’s lacrosse coach Matt Grosso is leaving Guilford after eight years to start a women’s lacrosse team at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, that will begin play in 2014.

Grosso is Guilford’s winningest and longest tenured women’s lacrosse coach with a 56-75 overall record including a record-setting 11-7 mark in 2012. He was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Award this spring after leading the Quakers to a share of second place in the regular-season standings and their first ODAC Tournament berth since 1992.

A search for Grosso’s replacement is underway. The new coach will inherit 12 letter winners from the 2012 team, including six starters and four All-ODAC honorees.

President Chabotar Quoted on Higher Education Governance

President Kent Chabotar was quoted in an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education about Theresa Sullivan, who was forced out of the University of Virginia presidency. Theresa, a self-described “incrementalist” who had led the institution for two years, felt pressured by members of the Board of Visitors to quickly make dramatic changes.

Faced with financial challenges and a changing landscape in higher education, governing boards are increasingly impatient, Kent said. Whereas new presidents were once allowed two years to learn the campus, assemble a leadership team, and connect with alumni and board members, that period has shrunk to more like six months, he said.

Theresa was a participant in the Harvard Seminar for New Presidents in which Kent has taught financial leadership since 1990.

Budget Message from President Kent Chabotar

I write to address questions expressed after the recent reduction-in-force due largely to the $2.5 million loss in North Carolina state funded financial aid. There are limits due to College policy and best practice in higher education to what we can disclose about personnel matters. That can be frustrating when myths and rumors cloud conversations and the College cannot comment.

That is also hard because we deeply sympathize with the persons affected and their families. We thank them for their service to this College and our students. It is small consolation that colleges and universities across the nation are taking similar actions such as Greensboro College eliminating six faculty and two staff positions earlier this month and the UNC system losing $440 million and cutting 3,000 positions. Nevertheless, even with the personnel and expense cuts announced on June 8, the College still faces a significant deficit next year although we have been able to limit endowment spending to 5 percent of its market value.

Faculty, students, staff and other users of the College network can log on to GuilfordNet for the full budget message.

Wilmington Star-News Profiles Jack Holley ’63

The Wilmington Star-News on June 16 published a Father’s Day profile of Jack Holley ’63.

“Jack Holley’s 412 coaching victories make him the leader in North Carolina high school football history. That feat seems to pale in comparison to accounts of him as a father of three children and grandfather to seven,” the article begins.
