The Greensboro News & Record on April 25 covered a study of housing gaps by Guilford students led by associate professor SHERRY GILES and teaching assistant JOHN ST. LOUIS.
A dozen justice and policy studies students interviewed 57 homeless people in collaboration with the Interactive Resource Center, which provides assistance to those who are homeless. They found that “the city needs more and safer temporary shelters; more help for certain groups of people such as ex-felons, single parents and mental patients; and more affordable, permanent housing,” according to the story.

President KENT CHABOTAR was quoted in a Businessweek story about High Point University. The article examined the challenge of rapidly remaking a college or university. “Reputations take forever to change,” said Kent, who was interviewed due to his expertise in higher education finance.
Kent recently returned from New York where he conducted a strategic finance seminar for Bank Street College of Education’s master’s program in museum management in addition to meetings with Guilford parents, alumni and a potential donor. Later, he again taught the Seminar for New Board Members at the National Conference on Trusteeship in Washington.

An internship at the Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship has led to a co-author credit for CCE business major KENDRA BROOKS. Her work as a paid intern last summer contributed to a paper recently published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, “Online Doctor Reviews: Do They Track Surgeon Volume, a Proxy for Quality of Care.”
“Everyone was pleased with the outcome of the internship, and to have a published article from the experience is a significant benefit,” says SAM FUNCHESS ’98, president and CEO of the Nussbaum Center. He earned degrees in accounting and management at Guilford.
BETTY KANE supervised Kendra’s work last summer and will also serve as faculty sponsor for the intern to be chosen for this summer. The selection process for the 2012 summer internship with the Nussbaum Center is currently underway. The internships are funded by BB&T and administered through the Center for Principled Problem Solving.
