Renovated Training Room Named in Honor of Mary Broos

Guilford’s newly renovated athletic training room has been named in honor of longtime athletic trainer and sport studies instructor MARY BROOS. The recently completed project transformed a former locker room and storage space into a modern area for the evaluation and treatment of athletics-related injuries. The room in the basement of Alumni Gym also contains office space for the athletic training staff and visiting doctors.

Broos became Guilfords full-time athletic trainer in 1978 and held the position until her retirement in 2008. She was the first female head athletic trainer in North Carolina and named the 1989 North Carolina Athletic Trainer of the Year by the N.C. Athletic Trainers Association. Broos was enshrined in the organization’s Hall of Fame in 2003, nine years after her induction into Guilford’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

Mary and her husband, Jim, have two sons, BRIAN and BRAD, both Guilford graduates. She continues to teach in the Sport Studies Department on a part-time basis.

Reading of Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays Set for Nov. 7

Guilford will join more than 25 theatres and universities nationwide to host the premiere of the new play “Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays” Monday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. in Sternberger Auditorium.

Theatre Studies will present a live, staged reading of the play, directed by theatre studies professor DAVID HAMMOND. Admission will be free on a first-come, first-served basis. Donations will be accepted by Equality North Carolina.

The performance will be preceded by a video prologue via internet from the New York theatre where Tectonic Theatre Project will be opening the play that night. Following Guilford’s live performance, the audience will join a discussion from New York, also broadcast via live internet streaming, in which panelists will address questions submitted via Twitter.

Hammond said that “Standing on Ceremony” examines the subject of gay marriage from multiple perspectives and includes works by some of America’s leading playwrights. “Both because of the contemporary significance of the subject matter and because of the excellence of the writing, it’s a theatre piece we felt compelled to do,” Hammond said. “We participated in Tectonic’s ‘The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later’ a couple of years ago, and it was a very powerful and thought-provoking evening for our audience.”

Audience members will be able to watch a live streaming introduction before the play, as well as a post-performance Q&A, from the Minetta Lane Theatre in New York City, where “Standing on Ceremony” begins preview performances that night. Attendees will be able to participate in the Q&A, regardless of their locale, by submitting questions via Twitter in real time.

Theatre Studies opens its 2011-12 season with “Company,” music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth. Performances are November 4-5 and 10-12 at 8 p.m. in Sternberger Auditorium, located in Founders Hall.

Tickets are $3 for Guilford College students, faculty, and staff. All other tickets are $5. For tickets or more information, visit the Guilford College Theatre Studies website.

“Company” follows the life of Bobby, a committed bachelor celebrating his 35th birthday with the five married couples who are his best friends. Finally, “Company” is the story of a man who weighs the fun of bachelorhood against the benefits of deeper intimacy.

“Company” won six Tony Awards in 1971, notably for Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical. Broadway revivals of “Company” won Tony Awards in 1996 and 2007.
