Following the recently completed Academic Prioritization, the Administrative Program and Services Assessment project was announced in April 2011. The purpose of this assessment is process improvement, greater accountability for results, improved metrics for assessment, and enhanced efficiency. Our goal is not to identify staff or budget reductions/reallocations. However, opportunities for reductions and/or reallocations will be considered should they appear.
The Administrative Program and Services Assessment Team (APSA Team), has been meeting since May. The team is co-chaired by JON VARNELL (Administration) and GREG BURSAVICH (Finance). Members of the team include: CHRISTINA ATKINS (Advancement), BRYAN BRENDLEY (Faculty Representative), ERIN DELL (Academic Affairs), FRED DEVINE (President’s Office), TRACY FURJANIC (Campus Life), OWEN GRUMBLES (Institutional Research), TOM PALOMBO (Enrollment Services), and CALEB WHITED-FORD (Student Representative). ERICA KIMBROUGH and BECKY RENTERIA provide administrative assistance to the team.
The APSA Team has hired the firm Academic Strategy Partners to assist the College with this project. This firm is comprised of four principals, including Robert Dickeson who assisted in the verification of the Academic Prioritization. The APSA Team recently met with Academic Strategy Partners to begin solidifying the process that will be used during the Administrative Program and Services Assessment project.
The APSA Team will be providing a dedicated website on GuilfordNet to the Administrative Program and Services Assessment project. This website will provide information including: the committee charge, team members, guiding principles, timeline, and advertisement of events pertaining to the project. This website will also include the proposed criteria for the community to review and provide feedback, prior to it being dispersed across campus for completion by departments.
The APSA Team has identified the following Guiding Principles for the Administrative Program and Services Assessment:
Transparent: The study criteria, the process and the timetable will be collaboratively developed, approved and well publicized in advance of the study. With reports from departments being posted on GuilfordNet.
Comprehensive: The study criteria will be broad in scope so as to encompass all aspects of an administrative area.
Consistent: The same study criteria will be applied to each administrative area; only their measurement may change as appropriate.
Inclusive: All College programs will be analyzed, and all College employees will have the opportunity to participate in the development of their administrative area reports.
Data-driven: While retaining our value of community, we must also embrace the culture of evidence, one that ensures that administrative area decisions now and in the future will be based on both quantitative and qualitative data. Once established, the database may be updated and used as a management tool going forward.
Confidential: All team members are charged to keep all deliberations confidential and team members are working independent from their other job duties.
The APSA Team will continue to provide updates to the community on the events and development of the process. There will be multiple opportunities for community involvement and feedback, including upcoming forums and workshops. We project that the project should be completed and the results announced to the campus community during the fall 2012 semester.

ANDREW K. “ANDY” STRICKLER was appointed director of admission effective Sept. 12. Reporting to RANDY DOSS ’82, vice president of enrollment services, Strickler supervises the day-to-day operation of the admission office.
Strickler comes to Guilford with 15 years experience in higher education admission, advancement and athletics administration, most recently as associate director of admissions at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania.
“Andy’s background as a Quaker and his experience working at colleges with values similar to Guilford’s give him a unique understanding of the type of student that will thrive at Guilford College,” Doss said. “He will be critical in identifying and recruiting prospective students nationwide and internationally.”
At Ursinus, Strickler was athletic liaison, coordinating with coaches and recruits on admission and financial aid needs. He managed the Red & Gold open house program for high school seniors as well as open houses for juniors and athletic recruits, and hosted the Open Committee program of half-day campus visits by high school counselors.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Earlham College in Indiana and a master’s degree in social studies education from Indiana University.
