SLRP I Final Progress Report Highlights Guilford Strategic Planning Since 2005

Every spring, the Strategic and Long Range Planning Committee (SLRP) assesses progress on the strategic plan and publishes an annual report for the community. This year, as Guilford College concludes the 2005-2010 strategic planning cycle and begins implementation on the new plan, the committee took stock of where Guilford has been, what we have done, what we have (and have not) achieved, and what work and challenges remain.

This more comprehensive final progress report on The Strategic Plan for Guilford College 2005-2010: Creative Leadership for the 21st Century (SLRP I), “Strategic Planning since 2005: Pride and Promise,” can be found here.

The approachable report includes a summary overview, discussion of the institutional foundations that underpin the plan, review of the SLRP I planning environment and structure, presentation of accomplishments, honest assessment of persisting areas of concern that require additional work, and discussion of next steps. The report discusses our transition to SLRP II, The Strategic Plan for Guilford College 2011-2016: Outcomes of a Guilford Education.

SLRP I emerged at a time of financial crisis. We embarked on an innovative path together. The plan contained three continuing goals and two operational priorities: excel at education that transforms our students and our world, expand our academic community, strengthen our Quaker presence and enhance campus diversity, stewardship and accountability, and improve our campus community.

SLRP I strengthened our financial foundation and emphasized our seven core values, principled problem solving and development of the center, responsible enrollment growth, campus and facilities improvements, and a recommitment to our Quaker heritage. The plan met shifting circumstances and emerging opportunities. It laid the groundwork for a campus master plan, a case statement for a capital campaign, and a diversity plan. It set precedence for the planning and development of SLRP II.

The completion of SLRP I provides senses of pride and accomplishment. The plan’s specificity, practicality, comprehensiveness, audacity, and progress reflect the hard work of everyone in our community. The strategic plan has influenced decision-making and the Guilford community to be goal-oriented, fact-based, and more confident.

While many serious challenges remain, it is an exciting time for Guilford College as we strive to build on SLRP I and focus squarely on students’ educational experience with SLRP II. We have positioned ourselves for a bright future. Our mission, core values, and heritage will continue to guide the way. Our shared vision and the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees that make up our community will continue to be our greatest resources.

Flextime Offered for the Months of June and July 2011

The College will offer flextime again this year. Departments, with departmental and VP approval, may allow full-time employees the opportunity to work flexible hours. This program is available during June and July 2011 only. If the employee typically works 37.5 hours during five days, she/he will work the same number of hours on a revised schedule over four or four and a half days rather than five days. If the employee works 40 hours during five days, she/he will work the same number of hours over four or four and a half days.

It is up to the manager of the department: (1) to approve the flextime program for the particular department with input from the senior administrator to whom she/he reports; (2) to assure that all employees who participate in the flextime program work the allotted number of hours for the week; (3) to not allow employees to take a Monday or Friday of the week; (4) to cancel the flextime program if it interferes with customer service in a negative way; and (5) to consult with affected staff in advance of implementation/cancellation so that they may best adjust their non-work schedules. Also, if managers wish to participate, these managers may take their flextime during the same months as the staff.

This program will not affect office hours. This is a voluntary program for both the department and employee. Employees may choose not to participate. If employees/departments choose not to participate, they simply continue to work their regular work schedules. Please call the Office of Human Resources if you have questions regarding this program.

Article by Jim Hood Appears in Victorian Institute Journal

Professor of English Jim HoodJIM HOOD’S article, “‘Permanently Valuable’: Victorian Christian Literary Annuals and the Commodification of Religion,” has appeared in the most recent volume of the Victorians Institute Journal. The article explores various ways in which a group of lavishly illustrated, specifically Christian, English and American early Victorian publications appropriated both the look and generic content of their very popular, secular literary annual counterparts, transforming their Christian message into a commodity and thereby signalling a decline in Christian cultural hegemony.
