JUSTIN PARKER ’11 has been invited to the second annual D-III Senior Classic, hosted by the Collegiate Development Football League (CDFL). The CDFL is a competitive football league meant to train football players 18-24 years of age for post-high school play. The D-III Senior Classic showcases the top 90 seniors in NCAA Division III with a North vs. South all-star game. Players are invited to play based on application and committee selection. The Senior Classic takes place today at Salem Stadium in Salem, Va.
Parker, a 6-1, 200-pound receiver, recently completed a decorated career for the Quakers. He began his career as a running back for the Quakers, compiling 15 career rushing touchdowns, good for fourth in school history. In his junior season, he began the transition to wide receiver and made a team-high 55 receptions for 493 yards and three touchdowns, which helped him garner Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honors. This year, Parker was featured primarily as a receiver. He caught 46 balls for 457 yards and four touchdowns in just seven games because of a knee injury that kept him out of the first three games. Parker’s best game of the season came Oct. 30 at #18-ranked Hampden-Sydney College where he had nine receptions for 109 yards and three touchdowns, accounting for all of Guilford’s scores in the 49-20 loss.
For his career, Parker is tied for sixth in school history with 22 total touchdowns scored in 36 career games. He ranks in the top-10 in school history in several categories, including rushing yards (ninth with 1426), all-purpose yards (ninth with 2800), and receptions (ninth with 138). His 10 rushing touchdowns in 2008 set the school record.

DERRICK KOSGEI ’12 earned Guilford’s first at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships by placing fifth at the South/Southeast Regional Championship meet Nov. 13. He earned one of seven at-large berths in the 280-runner field.
The Division III men’s and women’s national championships will be held Nov. 21 in Waverly, Iowa. Kosgei will compete in the men’s eight-kilometer race.
Kosgei placed fifth in the 156-man regional meet in 25 minutes, 20 seconds, the second-fastest eight-kilometer time in school history. Despite cold and rainy conditions, he led the race up until the final 1,000 meters when race winner Sean Whitson of Virginia Wesleyan College led a charge to overtake Kosgei and deny him his fourth first-place finish of the season.
Guilford’s CHAD NORTON ’14 ran a personal-best 26:00 and took 12th place at the meet, which helped the Quakers finish a school-record seventh among 22 scoring teams.
Kosgei and Norton received All-Region honors. Five of six Quakers’ runners ran personal-best times on the eight-kilometer course.
Coach HEIDI PINKERTON’s harriers entered the meet ranked eighth in the latest United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches’ Association regional rankings.
ANNE MOGAVERO ’14 ran the second-fastest six-kilometer time in school history (25:07) in the women’s regional championship race. She placed 89th among 191 runners, seven spots ahead of teammate TAYLOR STOKES ’14, who ran a 25:16.

MEGAN SNIDER ’11 recently received a North Carolina Campus Compact Community Impact Student Award for making significant, innovative efforts to address local community needs.
Snider was one of 34 college students statewide to receive the honor, which includes a Volunteer Certificate of Appreciation from Gov. Beverly Perdue.
Snider is working toward a double major in elementary education and religious studies. As a Bonner Scholar, she has performed over 2000 hours of service. Snider helped create the children’s program Change through Art and Theatre (C.A.T.), an afterschool tutorial and enrichment program for students at Jefferson Elementary. Through the program, Guilford students tutor and mentor children and work with issues of social justice through art and theatre projects.
Last year, following the fatal shooting of Winston-Salem’s Sgt. Mickey Hutchens during a response to a domestic violence call, Snider created the organization Beautifully Brave. The non-profit offers workshops on domestic violence for men and women, vigils and a traveling exhibit that will visit several library branches.
North Carolina Campus Compact builds collaborations amongst the state’s colleges and universities and promotes programs to enhance students’ sense of responsibility, citizenship and leadership. For more information, visit www.nccampuscompact.org.

On Nov. 11, President KENT CHABOTAR hosted a delegation of about 24 senior officials from Japanese universities to lunch and a workshop at Ragsdale House. Their fact-finding tour from Nov. 8-12 also included visits to the University of Virginia, University of Richmond, Duke University, Elon University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The tour sponsors noted that they wanted to come to Guilford College because of Kent’s financial publications and teaching and our reputation for strategic budgeting. To this point, Kent led a 90-minute presentation on strategic budgeting followed by presentations by Director of Student Financial Services PAUL COSCIA on tuition discounting and by Vice President for Finance GREG BURSAVICH and Associate Vice President JIMMY WILSON on financial modeling.
Other Guilford faculty and staff also participated including Academic Dean ADRIENNE ISRAEL, Professor JIM HOOD, Associate Professor HIROKO HIRAKAWA and Assistant Academic Dean ERIN DELL.
