The men’s basketball team was picked fifth in the preseason Old Dominion Athletic Conference poll. Eastern Mennonite University was picked first, followed by Randolph-Macon and Virginia Wesleyan. All four teams competed in the NCAA Division III Championship last year, with Guilford finishing third nationally for the second straight season.
Coach TOM PALOMBO welcomes back 10 letter winners including T.C. ANDERSON ’11 and MARTIN STEPHENSON ’11. Other returnees include JUSTIN STAFFORD ’12 and GABRIEL LOWDER ’12. JOSH PITTMAN ’13 is the top returning scorer, having averaged 6.9 points per game last year.
The Quakers open regular-season play Nov. 15 against Greensboro College in the Greensboro Coliseum. They host an Italian Junior Team Tuesday, Nov. 2, and play at Wake Forest University Friday, Nov. 5, in pre-season exhibitions.

SUZANNE SULLIVAN, an assistant director in the Office of Communications and Marketing, is running in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., Sunday, Oct. 31. Anyone interested in tracking Suzanne’s progress may go to the results page of the MCM website. You may also map her progress on your smart phone by downloading the Racemate app. Her bib is #20187. The race begins at 8 a.m.

A concert taking place at the Homecoming Street Festival will feature music from alumni and other area bands and will honor musician TIMOTHY LAFOLLETTE ’01 for his community service work.
The festival will take place on Saturday, Nov. 6, on the lawn of New Garden Hall from noon to 7 p.m. The concert, sponsored by WQFS, will begin at 4 p.m.
Scheduled acts include Mad Tea Party (with AMI WORTHEN ’93), Decoration Ghost (with DEVENDER SELLARS ’01) and Never Eversole (with ANDY EVERSOLE ’02), along with area musical acts The Beast, the Calvin Edwards Trio and J. Timber.
At the concert, the Alumni Association will present its first Community Cares Award to LaFollette and 10 other alumni for their work with Often Awesome, which raises awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
LaFollette was diagnosed with ALS in April 2009 at age 29. His Often Awesome Army advocates for ALS awareness with fundraisers and a bi-weekly Web series that won the Outstanding Achievement Award in the documentary/new series category in the L.A. Webfest last March. He was recently featured in “Young Faces of ALS,” a new awareness campaign from The ALS Therapy Development Institute.
The award will also be presented to CATHERINE ELAINE BRALY ’01, WILLIAM JOSEPH DODSON ’00, ELISE HARRIS FOSTER ’02, SKYE NICOLE HARRIS ’01, FAITH EBBA JOST ’02, MICHELA CANNATA MAXWELL ’02, MARY KATHERINE MCNEELY ’02, KEVIN PATRICK MILLER ’03, DEVENDER SELLERS ’01 and ELISABETH SHARON TYROLER ’07.
The Alumni Association created the Community Cares Award this year to honor alumni who collectively demonstrate the Quaker testimony of community. The award will recognize the collective actions of alumni who live and work in the spirit of peace, justice, love, compassion and joy through their good works.
The festival will also include a number of local and green artisans and vendors, as well as laser tag, a rock climbing wall and other activities.

Guilford’s Center for Continuing Education will host an information session for its paralegal education programs on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m. in Joseph M. Bryan Jr. Auditorium, located in Frank Family Science Center. Guilford will once again offer its Paralegal Certificate Program in the spring semester.
The information session will include an extensive program outline, question and answer portion and refreshments. A paralegal instructor and recent students will be present.
The Paralegal Certificate Program begins Jan. 10 and runs through May 23 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-10 p.m., and one designated Saturday each month from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The cost of the program is $4,995, which includes instruction, materials and books. Students can pay in full or opt for a convenient installment pay plan.
Guilford’s Paralegal Certificate Program is approved by the N.C. State Bar, and Guilford College is a member of the American Association for Paralegal Education. The 19-week program is designed to prepare students to sit for the N.C. State Bar Paralegal Certification Examination; students are eligible to sit for the examination once they have successfully completed the course.

This year’s Homecoming celebration will begin with two service opportunities for the entire Guilford community Wednesday, Nov. 3.
Wednesday is Random Acts of Kindness Day, with a goal of planting 1,000 seeds of kindness around the world. Alumni, students, their parents and others in the Guilford community are encouraged to do something good for another person throughout the day, and then post it at www.guilford.edu/rak. Participants may also blog, tweet or post Facebook updates using the #guilfordrak hashtag. For suggested random acts of kindness, visit www.guilford/rak.
Also on Wednesday, a Stop Hunger Now packing party will take place from 1-3 p.m. in the Commons, located in Founders Hall. The party will pack ingredients for 10,000 meals. To sign up for the party or to donate, visit www.guilford.edu/homecoming.

The Guilford College American Chemical Society Student Affiliates volunteered Oct. 24 with the Central North Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society to celebrate National Chemistry Week at the Girl Scout Learning Center in Greensboro.
During National Chemistry Week, local ACS sections, colleges and industry work together to communicate the importance of chemistry to our quality of life. A different theme is designated each year for NCW and this year’s theme was “Behind the Scenes with Chemistry” which focused on chemistry in the movies.
The students participated in two hands-on activities: making a polymer that looks like “Flubber” and making pictures with blueprinting.

BRITTANY FREEMAN ’13 and NOAH RATNER ’13 both earned Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors. Freeman was also named Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week.
Freeman led the Quakers’ volleyball team to three consecutive wins last week, averaging a team-high 2.91 kills per set. She also notched 3.91 digs per set, three blocks and seven service aces. Freeman is the Quakers’ first recipient of the ODAC’s weekly prize since 2004.
Coach EMILY GANN’S team is sixth in the ODAC with a 4-4 record (14-12), the best mark since 1997.
Ratner paced the Quakers’ golf team with a third-place finish in the Davidson Invitational Oct. 18-19, shooting a two-under-par 68-71-75-214. Ratner placed third in the 75-player field and helped the Quakers to a fourth-place finish in the 13-team tournament. He finished the week holding third place in the Golfstat.com Division III Head-to-Head Player Rankings.
Coach COREY MAGGARD’S Quakers are ranked No. 1 in the Golf World/Nike Golf NCAA Division III Coaches’ Poll and the Golfstat.com Division III Head-to-Head Team Standings after wrapping up the fall season by winning the O’Briant-Jensen Memorial Tournament Oct. 25-26.

Naim Ateek, director of Sabeel, the Palestinian Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem, will share in a lunch discussion at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3, in the Atrium of the cafeteria. His visit is sponsored by Friends Center, which organizes annual work/study trips to Israel and Palestine which often include visits to Sabeel.
