Three German Majors will Spend Next Year Abroad

Two recent graduates and one rising junior who are majoring in German will spend the 2010-11 school year abroad teaching and studying in Europe.

ALLEN SHARPE ’09, who is currently completing an AmeriCorps assignment in Alaska, earned a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship, and will be assigned to teach English in two schools in Hermagor, Austria. Sharpe, who participated in the college’s Munich study abroad program three times, plans to improve his German language skills in order to attend graduate school in Germany. Since 1995, 16 students have earned Fulbright Teaching Assistantship in Austria and Germany, and two more received Fulbright Research Grants for study in Germany.

SARAH MUNRO ’10 received a partial fellowship to study at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, for a masters of international relations and European studies. In addition to German, Munro majored in international relations and political science.

ALAN WILDFEUER ’12 won an undergraduate scholarship through the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (German Academic Exchange Service) to study next year at Westphalian Wilhelms-University of Münster, Germany’s third-largest university. He will work with a professor there conducting independent research.

Guilford offers majors in German and German studies, and a study abroad session in Munich each fall.

Kimberly Keys Earns All-Region Softball Honor

Kimberly KeysKIMBERLY KEYS ’12 received Second Team All-Atlantic Region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Guilford’s ninth all-region softball honoree, Keys set or tied five school season records this year, including batting average (.463), hits (63) and RBI (46). The First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honoree hit a career-high five homers and led Guilford in on-base percentage (.483) and triples (2). A left-fielder, Keys stood fourth in the league in batting average, second in hits and fifth in RBI and doubles (12).

Fourth-year head coach DENNIS SHORES guided his club to a school-best 28-13-1 overall record and a 13-5 ODAC mark that tied for tops in the league. Shores expects as many as 18 letter winners back in 2011, including Keys.

Moscas Give $2.5 Million Toward $5 Million Endowment for Center for Principled Problem Solving

The Board of Trustees recently reaffirmed a commitment to establish a $5 million endowment for the college’s Center for Principled Problem Solving. In support of the mission of the center and the endowment, trustee DAN and BETH MOSCA of Brown Summit, N.C., have made a challenge gift of $2.5 million.

The Moscas made the gift in honor of their children, STACEY MOSCA SEGUIN of Brown Summit and D. PAUL MOSCA of Raleigh, N.C., who graduated from Guilford. The Moscas announced that they will match dollar for dollar contributions from the college’s Board of Trustees, alumni and friends toward the fund.

Once the $5 million goal is reached, the board will be asked to name the fund in honor of President KENT JOHN CHABOTAR in recognition of his leadership in establishing the Center for Principled Problem Solving as part of the college’s current strategic long-range plan.

“Kent has shown an extraordinary commitment to fact gathering, analytical thinking, consensus building and adherence to Quaker principles,” said JOE BRYAN JR., chair of the Board of Trustees. “Under his leadership, the college has consistently balanced its operating budget, limited endowment spending to fiver percent while completing $26 million in campus improvements since 2003.”

“Establishing the Center for Principled Problem Solving was a key part of the current strategic long-range plan, and integrating its goals into the academic program will be a primary initiative of the next strategic long-range plan, currently in development,” Chabotar said. “Furthermore, the Mosca family’s generous gift points to the ongoing objective of building Guilford’s endowment.”

Dan Mosca is the retired president of the property leasing and nursing home management company AdvoCare, which he founded in 1992. He is a past chair of the Board of Visitors and joined the college’s Board of Trustees in 2002. The Moscas are former members of the Parents’ Executive Council and served as Parent/Family Co-Chairs for the Our Time in History Campaign, completed in 2002.

Mosca said, “The Secretary of the Board of Trustees, VIC COCHRAN, and his wife SUSAN, were early contributors to the center. Vic’s encouragement and enthusiasm was essential in building the support for matching contributions.”

The Center for Principled Problem Solving challenges students, faculty and staff to solve real-world problems under the guidance of Guilford’s core values: community, diversity, equality, excellence, integrity, justice and stewardship.

The college will establish a National Board of Advisors for the center, including business, nonprofit and educational experts from across the country who will be charged with shaping the mission of the center.

Golfer Brian Creghan Wins Academic Honors

Brian CreghanBRIAN CREGHAN ’10 earned First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III At-Large Team honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America.

As a first-team all-district selection, Creghan is eligible for the organization’s Academic All-America teams, which will be announced June 8.

Creghan was a Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference honoree and won the league’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for the second straight season.

He stood third on the team and sixth in the league with a career-low 75.50 stroke average that ranks 39th in school history. He recorded three top-10 finishes on the year.

Creghan graduated with high honors May 8 with a degree in business management.

Guilford finished second among 37 teams in the NCAA Division III Championships and could return as many as four letter winners in 2010-11.

Council of Independent Colleges, Wal-Mart Give $100,000 for Adult Programs

The Council of Independent Colleges and the Walmart Foundation selected Guilford to receive a CIC/Walmart Success Award in the amount of $100,000 to fund a new program aimed at improving the success of adult first-generation college students.

The planned Gateways program will use a multi-faceted approach to address the unique challenges faced by adult students who are the first in their families to attend college, as well as the colleges and universities that serve them. It will include one-on-one counseling for new students to learn about college services, special mentoring, academic courses to address learning gaps and other programming.

Additionally, the program will gather information about the needs of adult first-generation students in order to develop a set of best practices for college administrators facing similar challenges.

“If no one in your family has ever been to college, being on a college campus as an adult student is analogous to being in a foreign country,” says RITA SEROTKIN, dean for continuing education and director of summer school. “With Gateways, we hope to provide adult learners with the maps, translators and guidebooks that will allow them to make the most of their college experience.”

The Center for Continuing Education is both the oldest in the state (having been founded in 1953) and the largest evening bachelor’s degree program in the Triad. In addition to bachelor’s degree programs, the center offers professional certification and test preparation courses.

“The U.S. Department of Education estimates that 40 percent of all college students are over the age of 23, and more than half of those adult college students are first-generation students, with larger challenges balancing college, work and family life. As a result, they are at greater risk of leaving college within their first year of enrollment than traditional age students. Through the Gateways program we hope to provide them with the guidance and tools they need to complete their degrees,” Serotkin said.

Bradburd, a defender, ranked sixth on the team with 29 ground balls and also contributed 10 points on eight goals and two assists in 16 games. She enters her junior season with 34 points (24 goals, 10 assists) in 33 games.

The five students helped coach MATTHEW GROSSO’S team to a 6-10 overall record. The Quakers posted a 3-5 league mark that earned the number-six seed in the ODAC Tournament. Grosso expects 14 letter winners back in 2011.
