Update of Faculty Salary Percentile

In the April 16 edition of the Beacon, the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment estimated that average faculty salaries at Guilford had reached the 54th percentile of the AAUP IIB average for faculty overall. Unfortunately, a miscalculation was made.

While it’s true that faculty salaries improved from the 37th percentile in 2009 to the 45th percentile in 2010, a significant achievement in the midst of a global economic crisis, we are still shy of reaching our 50th percentile target in the strategic plan. The Beacon article also stated, and remains true, that we are behind the target for professors and associate professors and will concentrate future salary increases on those most behind the 50th percentile for faculty and 45th percentile for staff.

Academic Dean Adrienne Israel Shares Academic Program Prioritization Report from Consultant

Adrienne IsraelIn last Friday’s Beacon, President KENT CHABOTAR and I briefed the community on the progress of the academic program prioritization study. We provided a list of tasks and timelines that will enable the college to complete the study by the end of fall 2010 semester. We also cited the consultancy of Dr. Robert Dickeson — author of the leading text in the field, Prioritizing Academic Programs — who visited with the Guilford community, trustees, faculty leadership and members of the administration to check on our methodology and fine tune our next steps.

Dr. Dickeson’s report with recommendations may be read here.

Bookstore Moving to New Location in Founders Hall in May

In May, the Guilford Bookstore is moving to a new location on the basement level of Founders Hall in space formerly occupied by the Student Health Service.

The move begins May 10 and is expected to be completed by May 17. Students and faculty are encouraged to purchase summer textbooks as soon as possible; however, services will be available throughout the moving period.

The relocation is the first phase of work to be completed and should be followed by improvements to the store layout, seating and merchandising this summer.

The existing bookstore space will be used for a new pizza shop, to be completed over the summer.

Thank you for your patience during this transition.

Scott Pierce Coleman Leaving Guilford This Summer for Colorado

Scott Pierce ColemanSCOTT PIERCE COLEMAN has announced that he will be leaving the Guilford Community this summer. He has served the past eight years as director of the Quaker Leadership Scholars Program and liaison to Career and Community Learning.

Coming to Guilford under the auspices of the Lilly-funded Initiative on Faith and Practice, Scott’s legacy includes the SERVE (Service, Experience, Reflection and Vocation in Education) program, which encouraged faculty to develop curriculum incorporating those elements. He taught several FYE classes, worked vigorously on bringing important speakers to campus, assisted in the creation of panels of significant and relevant topics and kept the concern of community at Guilford in his heart and actions.

Scott and his family will be moving to Colorado in support of his wife Loren’s acceptance into a hospital chaplaincy program. Once the academic year is finished, Scott will be discerning where he is feeling called to serve as they settle in Colorado. He expects to leave Guilford no later than July 31. We wish him well on the next stage of his journey.

Recent legislation passed by Congress has resulted in changes to the student loan process. Beginning in Fall 2010, Stafford Loans will be funded by the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program. There will be no changes to the total eligibility for students.

The only action needed will be for students to sign a new promissory note and entrance counseling with the federal government. Please check the Buzz, Beacon, Guilford e-mail and follow the new Guilford College SFS page on Facebook for updates.
