DIYA ABDO’s English senior seminar class will be presenting a series of films concerning Arab women throughout the spring semester.
These films, generously purchased by The Hege Library for the course ENG 400: Arab Women Writers, focus on the representation of Arab/Muslim women in movies (Hollywood Harems), the debate around the veil (Covered: The Hejab in Cairo Egypt), and the lives, struggles and triumphs of women in Algeria, Palestine, and Jordan (Algeria: Women at War, The Veiled Hope: Women of Palestine, and Family Ties).
The first film in the series, Hollywood Harems, will be screened Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Joseph M. Bryan Jr. Auditorium.

Guilford will name the court in Ragan-Brown Field House for long-time coach JACK JENSEN and six legendary basketball players will be recognized during Basketball Legacy Weekend Jan. 30-31.
The court dedication will occur following the 3 p.m. men’s basketball game against Randolph-Macon Saturday, Jan. 31. Jensen won 386 games in 29 seasons as men’s basketball coach and directed the Quakers to the 1973 NAIA national title. He still serves as golf coach.
Also following the game, the college will recognize four former players whose jerseys have been retired. DAN KUZMA (1960-64), BOB KAUFFMAN (1964-68), M.L. CARR (1969-73) and WORLD B. FREE (1972-75) will be honored.
On Friday, Jan. 30, at halftime of the 7 p.m. women’s game against Washington & Lee, ELIZABETH PARKER HASKINS (1972-76) and LAURA HAYNES SPAINHOUR (1994-98), whose jerseys have been retired, will be honored.
On each day, a reception for all will follow the game in Alumni Gym.

The Office of Public Safety advises students, faculty and staff to beware of a stray dog that recently attacked a student, requiring medical attention. The dog was last seen near the lake. It is dark brown with short hair and a long tail resembling either a hound or lab in body shape. Contact Public Safety immediately at 316-2909 if the dog is spotted.

The next College Meeting for Worship will be on Sunday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. in the Moon Room of Dana Auditorium. MELANIE PRINGLE ’09, music/Spanish, will lead the worship.
All are invited to hear fellow students, faculty, staff and visitors reflect on their spiritual journeys and their struggles.

The most up-to-date version of the Diversity Plan (Connecting Communities and Embracing Diversity), reflecting community input, is available via the two links below. The plan has been developed through an extensive, community-wide process and is a key objective of The Strategic Plan for Guilford College 2005-10.
This version incorporates feedback from faculty, staff and students and the Quaker Life and Diversity Committee of the Board of Trustees. The full board is scheduled to review the plan at its meetings Feb. 27-28.

Guilford faculty, students and staff are invited to join with N.C. Friends Disaster Service in a spring break work project. A new house will be built and repairs to houses will be made in an area of eastern North Carolina damaged by tornadoes last summer. People of all skill levels are welcome. Students from the Guadalajara Semester in fall 2008 will share stories of their adventures and learning Thursday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m. in King 126. Join them for conversation, photos, music and authentic Mexican food.
The Guadalajara Program offers a complex learning environment where students learn in several arenas, including: Spanish language classes at the University of Guadaljara’s Center for Foreigners; by living with a middle class Mexican family; through community development work with Intercolonias, a community organization working in low-income communities on the outskirts of the city; by learning to navigate this large and exciting city; and through travels in other parts of Mexico. Applications for the 2009 Guadalajara Semester are due Feb. 18.

Guilford is accepting nominations for the 2007 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award through March 6.
The award honors “excellence of character and service to humanity” by a resident of the Triad and a graduating senior at Guilford. The recipients will be recognized during the college’s spring awards convocation April 15.
The award was established in 1925 by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation to honor the man for whom it was named. Sullivan made important charitable contributions to the welfare of young people in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Guilford is among a select group of colleges and universities authorized to present the award.
Past community recipients of the award are Joseph M. Bryan Jr. in 2002, Jessie Lee Howard in 2003, Stanley Frank in 2004, Alan Duncan in 2005, JAMES F. MORGAN ’66 in 2006, Omer A. Omer in 2007 and W. GROOME FULTON JR. ’60 in 2008.
Past student recipients are SHANEENA ROBERTSON in 2002, JACQUELINE GASKILL in 2003, KENYONA “SUNNY” MATTHEWS in 2004 and ELIZABETH BALOF-BIRD in 2005, HATICE DOGAN in 2006, JADA MONICA DREW in 2007 and IRVING ZAVALETA-JIMENEZ in 2008.
Nominations will be accepted via an official form that may be obtained from HELEN ALLEN in the Office of Advancement by calling 336-316-2166 or e-mailing hallen2@guilford.edu. Letters of support may accompany the nomination forms. All materials must be submitted by the deadline of March 6.
The community recipient shall not have been an employee of Guilford for at least five years before the nomination.
