Guilford Shares Achieves Goals with 43 Percent Participation and $27,500 in Donations

Guilford Shares achieved its goals! Additional contributions, including another donation from President KENT CHABOTAR that pushed the total to the goal and over the top, saw the 2008 Guilford Shares end with total donations of $27,513 and 43%% participation by 160 faculty and staff. The donation total and participation rate exceeded this year’s $27,500 and 40%% targets.

With the generosity of the Guilford community and the much-appreciated hard work of the Shares building representatives and tri-chairs (SONYA MITCHELL-DUFFY, BRIAN WENGER AND JERRY JOPLIN) the United Way received $17,906, Earth Shares $8,583, and the United Arts Council $1,024. These organizations make a difference in the lives of countless people in Guilford County and are vitally important at this difficult time. Thanks to everyone who contributed to helping our neighbors during this “season of giving.”

Best wishes for happy holidays and a wonderful New Year.

President Chabotar Announces Extra Holiday on Jan. 2

A few years ago, we reorganized the holiday schedule to close the college between Christmas and New Year’s, roughly speaking. Besides wanting to give hard-working staff a block of time off during a hectic season, we also expected to save money and protect the environment with less use of power and other resources. For 2009, the first day back to work was supposed to be Friday, Jan. 2.

To bridge to the weekend, and to provide a non-monetary “bonus” in a tough economic year, Friday Jan. 2, will now be an additional holiday and the college will be closed. This is a one-time extra holiday. Human Resources will be open to handle payroll issues just as selected staff in Finance and Advancement work part-time during the holidays to handle year-end gift processing. If you have questions, please contact your supervisor or HR.

Happy holidays ….. Kent.
