COURTNEY KOZAR ’11 won her first Student-Athlete of the Week Award this week. The weekly prize is presented by Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Kozar, a 5-7 outside hitter, received the honor after helping Guilford to a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference wins with 2.78 points per set and four service aces. She averaged 2.11 kills per set and totaled 18 digs on the week. Kozar also claimed her second double-double of the year with a season-high 14 kills and 12 digs in the Quakers’ five-set win at Eastern Mennonite University. She added five kills and six digs at Randolph College.
Coach EMILY GANN’s Quakers (4-13, 2-3 ODAC) ended a 10-match losing streak with a 3-1 triumph at Randolph last week. The two wins also mark Guilford’s first back-to-back road victories since 2002.

Nationally recognized poets Jay Hopler and Kimberly Johnson will read selections from their work on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 5 p.m. in the Gallery of Founders Hall. The reading is free and open to the public.
Hopler’s poems and essays have appeared and are forthcoming in numerous magazines and anthologies, including The New Yorker, Colorado Review, The Kenyon Review and Seattle Review. His book of poems, Green Squall, received the 2005 Yale Series of Younger Poets Award, a Florida Book Award and a 2007 National “Best Books” Award from USA Book News. Other books include The Killing Spirit: An Anthology of Murder-for-Hire and The Yale Anthology of Younger American Poetry, to be published by the Yale University Press in 2009. Hopler is an assistant professor of English at the University of South Florida.
Johnson, a poet, translator and Renaissance scholar, is the author of the collections Leviathan with a Hook and A Metaphorical God, as well as a translation of Virgil’s Georgics. Her poems appear widely in such publications as The New Yorker, Slate and The Iowa Review. Johnson has received prizes from the Merton Foundation and the Utah Arts Council and a creative writing fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Diego Higuita, a pastor and executive secretary of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in Colombia, will speak Monday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Founders Gallery on “Peace in a Violent World.” Simultaneous translation will be provided by SARON SMITH-HARDIN ’09.
An active participant in the Presbyterian Church’s international peace program and a direct witness to the violence in his home country, Higuita will talk about his work in “fighting for peace.”
The visit is co-sponsored by Friends Center, Hispanics United of Guilford (HUG), GCRO, the Foreign Language Department, Peace and Conflict Studies and the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Greensboro.

The annual Quaker Festival Week ends Friday, Sept. 26 with the Quaker equivalent of a “bang,” featuring the following activities:
Noon: Historical Quaker tour of the campus and Quaker graveyard. Begin at the Hut.
5:30 p.m.: 19th annual Friends Meetings progressive dinner. Begin in the Carnegie Reading Room.
8:30 p.m.: Showing of classic Hollywood film about Indiana Quakers during the Civil War, Friendly Persuasion. Hut.

MAX L. CARTER has seven essays in the October-December issue of the Quaker daily devotional Fruit of the Vine, published by Barclay Press in Newberg, Ore.
The devotionals draw on the experience of Guilford’s IDS 405 “Community and Commitment” course and insights gained from Amish spirituality.

Anthony Bourdain, chef, author and host of The Travel Channel’s “No Reservations,” will speak about his work and life experiences in a bonus event in this year’s Bryan Series at the new Durham Performing Arts Center Thursday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
Bourdain is the executive chef at New York City’s famed bistro, Les Halles. He is the author of the bestselling memoir Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, which has been translated into more than 28 languages. He travels to the farthest reaches of the globe for his Emmy-nominated cable TV show, now in its fifth season.

The next College Meeting for Worship will be on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 1 p.m. in the Moon Room of Dana Auditorium. DEVORAH LITT ’09, music/psychology, will lead the worship. All are invited to hear fellow students, faculty, staff and visitors reflect on their spiritual journeys and their struggles.

The Kite Runner, a 2007 movie based on Khaled Hosseini’s best-selling book of the same name, will be shown Sunday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Leak Room of Duke Hall. Admission is free of charge.
Hosseini is the speaker for the opening event in this year’s Bryan Series on Friday, Oct. 24, at War Memorial Auditorium. Free tickets will be available for Guilford students and employees Tuesday, Sept. 30, beginning at 11 a.m. in Boren Lounge of Founders Hall and at 5 p.m. in Hendricks Hall.

BRIAN CREGHAN ’10 won his first Student-Athlete of the Week Award. The weekly prize is presented by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Creghan received the award after placing sixth among 96 contestants at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate. The top non-NCAA Division I finisher, he shot a 72-73-71 for a career-low and even-par 216 over 54 holes to help Guilford place second among 18 teams.
Coach JACK JENSEN’s Quakers are ranked No. 12 in the preseason Golf World/Nike Golf NCAA Division III Coaches’ Poll. Guilford travels to Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center Sept. 29-30 for the Greensboro College Invitational.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a breast cancer awareness promotion, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
