Ben Strong Wins Second ODAC Player of the Year Award

Ben StrongBEN STRONG ’08 received his second straight Kurt Axe Memorial Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year Award. The ODAC’s 10 head coaches nominated and selected two six-member all-star teams and the special award winners.

Strong is the first two-time league MVP since 1988 and the Quakers’ initial three-time First Team All-ODAC men’s basketball pick. Teammates ERIC BELKOSKI ’08 and CALEB KIMBROUGH ’08 received honorable mention all-league laurels.

Strong, a 6-11, 220-pound center, has been integral to the Quakers’ two consecutive 20-win seasons. He won a school-record five ODAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week awards this season, which gives him 13 weekly honors in his career. Strong leads the ODAC and ranks No. 4 in the NCAA Division III with 25.7 points per game. He also tops the conference and stands 15th nationally with 10.8 rebounds per contest.
He is one of 10 finalists for this year’s Jostens Trophy, given to Division III’s most outstanding men’s and women’s basketball players.

BelkoskiBelkoski, a 6-4 forward, is enjoying the finest of his four seasons and ranks third on the team in scoring (10.6 ppg.) and rebounding (4.9 rpg.). He stands among the league’s best in scoring (26th), rebounding (17th), and free-throw percentage (.763, 11th). Belkoski has scored in double figures 16 times with three double-doubles. The three-year starter matched his career best with a team-high 21 points in the Quakers’ regular-season finale, a 122-104 win over visiting Emory & Henry College.

KimbroughKimbrough, the Quakers’ starting point guard for the past four years, earns his first postseason recognition after averaging 7.4 points and a team-high 3.92 assists per game. He stands fourth among ODAC assists leaders and second in free-throw percentage (.845). Kimbrough also ranks among the league’s best in steals (1.4 spg., 11th) and assist-to-turnover ratio (5th, 1.69). With 341 career assists, he ranks fourth among Guilford’s career leaders and also has 122 steals, seven thefts shy of third place all-time at Guilford.

Tracey Croner Named to All-ODAC Basketball Team

TRACEY CRONER ’09 earned Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference basketball honors for the second straight season. The all-conference teams and special award winners were selected by the league’s head coaches.

Croner, a 5-10 forward, started all 25 games and led Guilford in scoring for the second straight season (12.4 ppg.). She stands 12th among the league’s scoring leaders through games of Feb. 25 and ranks seventh with a team-high .453 field-goal percentage. Croner ranked second on the team with a career-high 5.2 rebounds per game and also contributed 1.7 assists per outing. She paced Guilford’s scorers nine times and scored in double figures 17 times. Croner hit for a season-high 24 points and added six boards in the Quakers’ 92-68 win at Salem College Dec. 3. She notched her lone double-double of the season with 15 points and a team-best 10 rebounds in Guilford’s 64-53 loss at Washington and Lee University Jan. 29.

Croner, a 2007 second-team all-state honoree, enters her senior year with 653 career points (12.8 ppg.) and 227 rebounds (4.5 rpg.). She shoots 46.4 percent from the floor and 85.3 percent from the line through two seasons. Croner has scored in double figures 23 times in 51 career games.

Coach STEPHANIE FLAMINI’s Quakers posted an 11-14 record (6-14 ODAC) and returns all 12 letter winners for the 2008-09 campaign.

$2.2 Million Werner Gift will Fund Full-tuition Scholarships

A former U.S. Postal Service worker and his wife, who were long-term residents of Greensboro and alumni, have established the first endowed, full-tuition scholarships at the college through a $2.2 million gift from their estate. The scholarships are scheduled to be awarded for the first time in the 2008-09 academic year.

The scholarships were funded by a gift from FRANK ERWIN WERNER ’34 and his wife, AVA ROBERTS WERNER ’33. Frank Werner died in 2007 and Ava, in 2003. He worked for the postal service for 34 years and they lived on West Friendly Avenue in the city. They met in college and were married in 1937 at New Garden Friends Meeting by College President CLYDE MILNER.

Recipients of the Frank Erwin and Eva Roberts Werner Scholarships will receive full tuition as well as a stipend for additional academic support needs to be determined. The need-based awards are renewable for four years and require the maintenance of a 3.5 grade-point average.

“The Werners’ intention was that deserving and well-qualified students would have the opportunity for a Guilford education, one that served them so well over their lifetimes,” said President KENT CHABOTAR. “The Werner Scholarships will enable the college to attract top students with the promise of significant financial support. We are very grateful that the Werners had the vision and commitment to establish this endowed fund.”

JOSEPH M. BRYAN JR., chair of the Board of Trustees, said, “The Werners are role models for all of us who are Guilford graduates. They had believed in the value of higher education and in young people. Their gift will benefit many generations of future students at the college. I only wish we had been given the chance to honor their generosity and had them meet student scholarship recipients while they were living.”

Frank Werner, a native of Hammonton, N.J., graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He was superintendent of mails for the Personnel Division of the Regional Section Center in Greensboro at the time of his retirement in 1970. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

At Guilford, Frank Werner participated in the choir, with the Guilfordian newspaper staff, Dramatic Council, Fine Arts Club, French Club, Henry Clay Debating Society and men’s tennis team.

Ava Werner, a native of Floydale, S.C., earned a bachelor’s degree in English and was employed for 17 years as a credit analyst with Blue Bell Inc. At Guilford, Ava Werner was active in Student Government and the choir.

In their later years, the Werners lived in Myrtle Beach and Little River, S.C., where he was a licensed Coast Guard captain and operated a charter boat.

Trustees Approve New Campus Road Names

The Board of Trustees on Feb. 23 approved names for six campus roads that were previously unnamed. The State of North Carolina Building Code requires that all roads be named in order to assist fire and other emergency personnel. The college has now forwarded the list of names to the City of Greensboro for final processing and implementation.

Only one change was made from the final list of road names that was circulated to the campus community and forwarded to the board in advance of its regular meeting last weekend. At the suggestion of President KENT CHABOTAR and the recommendation of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, the full board endorsed naming the roadway near Milner Guest House and Ragsdale House as Rachel Carson Court instead of Sustainability Court. Although feedback from the community supported the recognition of the college’s environmental efforts and concerns, the name “Sustainability Court” was regarded by some as too “jargony” and inexplicable for a lay audience.

Rachel Louise Carson (1907-1964) was an American marine biologist and nature writer whose writings are often credited with launching the global environmental movement. She was the author of the ground-breaking book Silent Spring and other works. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th Century.

Carson is not without her critics. Some environmental scholars have questioned Carson’s scientific acumen, including her data on bird species and her projections on the rising toxicity of DDT and other chemical sprays.

The other new road names are as follows:

  • Elizabeth Fry Road, honoring a leading prison reformer and Quaker minister in England (1780-1845), running from central campus out to the North Student Apartments.
  • George Fox Road, honoring the founder of the Religious Society of Friends (1624-1690/1), running from the northwest entrance (Arcadia Drive) to the intersection behind Founders Hall.
  • Quadrangle Drive, running from Bryan Hall around the quad to the campus entrance by New Garden Hall.
  • Levi Coffin Drive, honoring a Quaker (1798-1877) who lived in the New Garden community and is best known as the “President of the Underground Railroad,” running from the West Friendly Avenue entrance to the quad.
  • Friends School Drive, running from New Garden Road to the New Garden Friends School complex.

The road-naming process began last September and has involved many people in the college community. The process included an informal gathering of suggestions from the community in the fall, followed by a survey of the full community that resulted in more than 60 different suggestions from about 80 participants. There was an additional call for input in January. Proposed road names were vetted, as required, with city government so as not to duplicate existing city road names.
