IT&S and Facilities to Run Generator Test December 27

At 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27, IT&S and Facilities will be testing the generator and batteries for Bauman’s server and telecommunications room.

What does this mean?
To ensure smooth testing of the generator, IT&S will need to shut down services on its servers. This includes phones, voicemail, Moodle, Banner and Bannerweb, and perhaps other services as needed.

How long will these services be unavailable?
We expect to have all services up and running again by 1 p.m. on Dec. 27.

What happens to my e-mail if that service goes down?
Most e-mail providers will attempt to deliver a message for 24 hours. If the provider does not, the sender will get a return message and can simply try to send the message again.

Why are we doing this?
This test is necessary for our emergency planning processes. As we prepare for winter and the possibility of ice and power outages, it is important to know that the generator is tested. The reason for shutting down these services is to make sure that any power surges that may occur during testing do not affect the data or services. Again, we do not expect to lose power or have any power surges; this is simply a precaution.
