An outpouring of interest in the January Friends Disaster Service work trip to Bogalusa, La., has resulted in full vans. If you missed signing up for the trip, we can put your name on a waiting list. Call Campus Ministry at ext. 2445. An additional trip is planned for spring break.

The new issue of the GCRO “Caw,” Guilford’s bi-weekly campus ministry newsletter, is now available online. Follow the links from Administration to Friends Center/Campus Ministry publications. The current issue contains a guest article on Baha’i spirituality, a challenging letter to the editor, news of upcoming events and the usual “Concordance Caper” and “From the Back Bench” features.
Hard copies of the newsletter are available in the Hut.

Campus Ministry and the Guilford Council of Religious Organizations (GCRO) have planned a variety of holiday events to help the campus observe the season:
Fri., Dec. 2
12:30 p.m. “Unplug the Christmas Machine.” Share ideas for a simple, meaningful Christmas at the weekly brown bag lunch discussion. Hut.
3:30 p.m. Rides leave the Hut for the traditional Moravian Candle Tea in Greensboro.
Sun., Dec. 4
1 p.m. “Seasonal Music” at College Meeting for Worship. A variety of vocal and instrumental performances as well as hymn singing. Moon Room.
7:30 p.m. Vespers this evening is replaced by the Holiday Concert.
Tues., Dec. 6
9:30 p.m. Vespers, led by BETSY BLAKE ’99. Hut.
Wed., Dec. 7
5:30 p.m. Midweek meeting for worship. Hut.
9:30 p.m. Vespers. Hut.
Thurs., Dec. 8

Are you passionate about community service? Guilford’s Bonner Scholars Program currently has openings in the first-year and sophomore classes. The Bonner Program has been on campus for more than a decade. During that time, Bonners have served in thousands of organizations, from after-school tutoring programs to prison discussion groups and Habitat for Humanity. The Bonner Program encourages a lifetime of community service involvement and leadership.
Bonners perform approximately 10 hours of service a week, attend a monthly Bonner meeting, and turn in a monthly journal and hour log to the Bonner Coordinator. For their dedication to service, Bonners receive an annual $2,100 scholarship, summer support of up to $2,500, and access to funds to help support ongoing community service projects. Prospective Bonners must demonstrate a certain level of financial need, so check with your financial aid officer to see if you qualify to apply.

Forty ornaments remain to be taken from the Giving Trees. There are trees in Founders Lobby and in the Greenleaf with Christmas wishes requested by children for the holiday. Please be generous with your support, whether you prefer to donate gifts or provide money. There are requests for gift cards, coats, shoes, toys, diapers, etc.
All gifts are asked to be returned to Project Community by Wed., Dec. 7, wrapped and with the ornament attached. If you have any questions about the Giving Tree, please call ext. 2137.

Thank you to all of the faculty, staff and students who gave blood Nov. 18. We appreciate your support and your willingness to give. Our goal was to receive 50 units of blood, and thanks to your generosity, we collected 67 units.

The Greensboro Oratorio Society will present Handel’s “Messiah” Thurs., Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. at War Memorial Auditorium. Admission is free and the event is sponsored in part by Guilford College. President KENT CHABOTAR is scheduled to make welcoming remarks.
Soloists are Elizabeth Williams-Grayson, soprano; Cheryse McLeod, mezzo-soprano; Christopher Cameron, tenor; and James J. Rollins, baritone. The Oratorio Society is under the direction of Jay Lambeth.
This is the 52nd annual performance of the Messiah by the Oratorio Society. The event is also sponsored by Flow Lexus and the United Arts Council. DAN MOSCA, college trustee, is Oratorio Society president.

The annual Holiday Concert, featuring the choir, chamber singers and guitar ensemble, will be Sun., Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Dana Auditorium. Admission is free.
Under the direction of WENDY LOOKER, the choir and chamber singers will perform with guest soprano Christina Pier, winner of the 2003 Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions. The guitar ensemble will perform under the direction of KAMI ROWAN.

The Cline Observatory will hold an open-house event, “Messier Objects,” Sun., Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Joseph M. Bryan Jr. Auditorium.
In 1774, Charles Messier published his catalog of “fuzzy objects” which could be mistaken for a comet. These objects are favorites of skywatchers. A short multimedia presentation will explain the history of the list and the nature of the objects, and will be followed by a tour of the observatory and viewing through the small telescopes and main telescope if weather permits.

North Carolina Public Radio WUNC (91.5-FM) will broadcast Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s Bryan Series talk Sun., Dec. 4, at 6 p.m.
Tutu addressed a sold-out War Memorial Auditorium Nov. 3 on “Reconciling Love: A Millennium Mandate.” He was in Greensboro for a two-day visit which included a Nov. 2 meeting with Guilford students.
The Chapel Hill, N.C.-based radio station is the media partner for the Bryan Series for the second straight year. Of the 760 NPR-affiliated stations nationally, WUNC ranks in the top 30 for audience and has a signal that reaches from Greensboro to the coast.
