Jennifer Agor Named Coordinator of New Student Programs

JENNIFER AGOR has been named coordinator of new student programs in the Office for Campus Life.

Agor, who began work May 23, has worked in first-year experience programs at Appalachian State University and the University of Georgia. She spent the past year working with Watauga College, a residential learning community at Appalachian, and was involved in all facets of residence life while teaching a freshman seminar course.

At Guilford, she will oversee the college’s orientation program, CHAOS (Community, Health, Advisement, Orientation, Services), as well as other first-year student programming.

“We are thrilled that Jennifer has chosen to join our department and the Guilford College community,” said AARON FETROW, dean for campus life. “Jennifer’s arrival will enable us to provide exemplary service and activities to the class of 2009.”

While at Appalachian, Agor planned and taught a community-building class, assisted with staff selection and training, and helped new students acclimate themselves to the community. Agor also worked in career development at Appalachian while working toward her master’s in college student development and student affairs practice, which she completed earlier this month.

“My philosophy is that encouraging students to develop their leadership skills by taking ownership of their surroundings and identifying their own needs helps them foster a stronger sense of belonging within the community,” Agor said.

Agor also spent a summer at Georgia, where she helped plan and implement all aspects of residence hall social programming for the Freshman College Summer Experience Program and collaborated in the creation of academic initiatives within residence halls.

A native of Champlain, N.Y., Agor earned a bachelor’s degree in speech communications from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 1998.

Jennifer Franklin ’05, Rob Bittner ’06 Earn All-State Diamond Honors

JENNIFER FRANKLIN ’05 and ROB BITTNER ’06 earned all-state recognition from the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association this week. Franklin received all-state softball honors and Bittner represented Guilford on the group’s baseball team.

The squads consist of NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA student-athletes from North Carolina colleges and universities. North Carolina sports information directors submitted nominees and NCCSIA members selected the team.

Franklin captured Second Team All-Atlantic Region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association earlier this month and was a First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference honoree. The center fielder held a share of the team lead in every offensive category save stolen bases, where she ranked second, and RBIs, where she finished third. She hit .393 with 15 doubles, four homers and 17 RBIs in 40 games. The three-year starter placed among the ODAC’s toughest hitters to strike out, fanning only five times, the lowest figure among Guilford regulars. Franklin paced the conference in total bases (86) and doubles (15) and ranked second in hits (55) and home runs.

Head coach TY COOK’s Quakers finished the season with a 16-24 record overall, 8-8 in the ODAC. They set school standards for the most overall and conference wins in a season. Guilford was eliminated in the six-team, double-elimination ODAC Tournament in Salem, Va. Guilford fell to fourth-seeded Bridgewater, 4-3 in eight innings, and third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan, 6-4. The Quakers expect 10 letter winners back next season.

Bittner, a first baseman, received honorable mention All-ODAC honors in 2005. He shared Guilford’s 2004-05 Best Undergraduate Male Athlete Award with golfer COLIN CLARK ’07 and won the baseball team’s Most Valuable Hitter and Most Valuable Player prizes. He shared the team lead in every offensive statistical category, save runs scored, doubles and triples. Bittner hit a career-best .403 with an ODAC-leading 10 home runs and 45 RBIs, which ranked fourth in the league. He had 17 multi-hit games, including a 5-for-5 performance with three runs scored and two RBIs against Piedmont Feb. 26. Bittner ranks sixth in school history in career-home runs (19) and 10th in career-RBIs (99).

A left-handed hitter, Bittner batted .310 in 29 at-bats versus southpaws in 2005. Additionally, he batted .450 with runners on base and upped that mark to .467 with runners in scoring position. Defensively, in 377 chances Bittner posted a .984 fielding percentage, tops among Guilford’s regulars.

Coach GENE BAKER’s squad finished with a 24-17 overall record, the ninth-highest win total in Guilford history and its fourth straight 20-win season, a school record. The Quakers matched the Guilford standard with a 12-6 ODAC mark. Baker expects 23 returning letter winners next year.

IT&S to Perform Server Room Maintenance May 28

On May 28, IT&S will be performing maintenance in the data center that will increase the reliability of power and network to our systems. This maintenance will require that we shut off power and or network access to certain areas of the data center, meaning that all systems — including email, citrix, file shares and internet connectivity — may be unavailable for portions of the day Saturday. We do not intend to disrupt telephone services. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

Why are we doing this?
Within the past year IT&S has hired SCOTT ADAMSON as director of networks and TOM SWANTON as director of systems. Scott and Tom have evaluated the status of our core servers and have determined that the power and wiring infrastructure supporting these servers is in need of restructuring. We will be providing redundant power and network capabilities to systems where possible. This infrastructure work paves the way for continued growth and increases reliability of the systems that have grown so critical to the operation of the college.

Why is this important to you?
During the day Saturday, each server may experience some downtime. While we hope that system downtime will be minimal, this work will interrupt network and system access. To keep the community informed during the process, we will post a status report on the college’s website at the beginning and end of the work. We will not be reporting on the status of each system during the maintenance period. Please do not plan to use the systems Saturday until you see the notice that we have completed our work. (
http://www.guilford.edu/)

What systems will be affected?
All servers will be affected in some way by this maintenance. There will be some period of time when file services (share spaces), email, banner, bannerweb, and the Web will be unavailable.

Why do this now?
The college is closed for the long Memorial Day Weekend. This maintenance is critical to get our servers and server room ready for additional growth that will be occurring in the coming year.

Is it really that bad?
IT&S embraces the new transparency of decisions and processes at the college. We believe that it will be important to show before and after pictures as well as acknowledge the very detailed work of one of our student employees, BILL SCHALLER ’06, who has taken a lead not only in developing this site, but also in detailing the project. An internal Web site with before pictures and detailing our Saturday process is available at
http://ra.guilford.edu/serverroom/index.html (available on campus only). Here you’ll see the before pictures. Return to this site next week for the after pictures.

Can I do anything to help?
When you see an IT&S student or staff member tell them thanks for continuing to take the time to improve the stability and reliability of our network and systems.
