The talk, part of a yearlong Bryan Series examination of “Challenges Facing Democracy,” will be given three weeks after President George W. Bush’s second inauguration and eight days after his fifth State of the Union address.
Following the program, the 2005-06 Bryan Series speakers will be announced.
Newsweek has called Beschloss “the nation’s leading presidential historian,” and he is the author of seven books, including the acclaimed New York Times bestseller The Conquerors: Roosevelt, Truman and the Destruction of Hitler’s Germany, 1941-1945. He is a regular commentator on the PBS program The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and a contributor to ABC News.
Beschloss has completed two books in a trilogy on President Lyndon Johnson’s secret tapes, Taking Charge (1997) and Reaching for Glory (2001), which were both national bestsellers. His book The Crisis Years: Kennedy and Khrushchev, 1960-1963 (1991) won the Ambassador Book Prize and was called by the New Yorker the “definitive” book on President Kennedy and the Cold War.
As literary executor for the late Newsweek columnist Meg Greenfield, he edited her posthumously published book Washington (2001), which was a New York Times bestseller. He is now working on a history of President Lincoln’s last days and his assassination.
Beschloss holds degrees from Williams College and Harvard University. He has held appointments in history at the Smithsonian Institution, St. Antony’s College, Oxford University and the Harvard University Russian Research Center.

JENNAH CARTER ’07 and KIMBERLY MULLEN ’05 earned spots on the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association College Division Women’s Soccer Team, the organization announced Jan. 25. The Quakers also placed two players on last year’s all-state squad.
The team is comprised of 15 women’s soccer student-athletes from North Carolina’s NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA institutions. Sports information directors nominated student-athletes for the team, which was selected by NCCSIA members. NCCSIA was founded in 2002.
Carter had a hand in 28 of Guilford’s 42 goals this season and led the Quakers in scoring with 26 points on eight goals and a team-high 10 assists. The 5-4 forward ranked ninth among Old Dominion Athletic Conference points leaders and 10th in points per match. Carter shared the league lead in assists and ranked fifth among the loop’s assists-per-game leaders. Her 10 helpers rank fourth on Guilford’s single-season assists list and ninth on the Quakers’ career chart. Carter enjoyed two-goal matches in triumphs over Emory & Henry, North Carolina Wesleyan and Greensboro. She tallied the game-winning goals against N.C. Wesleyan and Greensboro.
A 5-3 midfielder, Mullen earned Second Team All-ODAC honors for the third straight season in 2004. She finished her senior season second on the team in goals (7) and points (17). Mullen registered a point in six matches and netted a club-high three game-winning goals. She recorded multiple-goal matches against Hollins and Bridgewater. Mullen, who tied Guilford’s records for points and goals in a season as a sophomore, concludes her career with 98 career points. She stands second among Guilford’s all-time goals (41) and points leaders and ranks fifth with 16 career assists.
Carter and Mullen helped the Quakers to a record-setting year. Third-year coach ERIC LEWIS guided the team to a 12-8-2 record, 7-2-2 in the ODAC. The 12 wins broke the previous school standard of 11, matched in 2003. Guilford also set school records with a 13-match unbeaten streak and a nine-match winning skein. The Quakers reached the ODAC Tournament semifinals for the first time in school history, and expect 20 letter winners back in 2005.

The position marks Nemenz’s first coaching job after a playing career at Glenn High School and Louisburg College. A 2001 Glenn graduate, Nemenz compiled 10 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and softball and earned All-Piedmont Triad 3-A Conference honors in basketball (2001) and softball (2000, 2001). She helped the softball team to a pair of state playoff appearances and a 33-19 overall record in her final two seasons.

JOHN BURKE ’88 resigned as head men’s lacrosse coach Jan. 26 and ANDREW ROWE was appointed interim coach for the upcoming season. Burke leaves the post after 18 months to return to his family and business opportunities in California.
“I regret John’s departure after he invigorated our men’s lacrosse program in a relatively short time,” Athletic Director MARION KIRBY said. “Andrew has played an important role as a recruiter and instructor of the many student-athletes on this year’s squad. He is the best person to lead the lacrosse team through the upcoming season.”
Guilford went 5-9 overall and 0-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in 2004, Burke’s only season as head coach. The Quakers matched their highest win total of the past 10 seasons, but went winless in the conference for the 10th straight season. Defenseman ROB MALLONEE ’04 became Guilford’s first All-ODAC men’s lacrosse selection since 1996 in 2004 under Burke’s direction. Attackman JOSH MILLER ’04 led the ODAC in points per game, graduated as the Quakers’ NCAA Division III career scoring leader and ranked fourth in school history with 199 points.
Burke coached the first five men’s lacrosse teams at neighboring Greensboro College from 1991-95 and has a 42-43 head coaching record in six seasons. He spent three years as an assistant men’s lacrosse coach at Ohio Wesleyan, during which time the Battling Bishops went 40-10 with three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.
Rowe becomes Guilford’s 12th head men’s lacrosse coach in the program’s 36-year history. He takes over a team with 14 returning letter winners and the 14 newcomers he and Burke recruited. A 2003 Ohio Wesleyan graduate, the St. Louis, MO, native twice received honorable mention All-America honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association as a midfielder. He scored 100 career goals and helped the Battling Bishops to three North Coast Athletic Conference titles and two NCAA Division III playoff berths in his four years. Rowe played in the 2003 STX/USILA North-South All-Star Game and was a two-time First Team All-NCAC pick.
Kirby said a search for Burke’s permanent replacement will begin later in the spring, near the conclusion of the men’s lacrosse season. The Quakers open the campaign Feb. 6 at the Tony Cullen Jamboree in Durham, N.C., and host Goucher Feb. 19 in the first regular-season contest.
