Author of “The Female Circumcision Controversy” to Make Presentation April 21

Anthropologist Ellen Gruenbaum, author of The Female Circumcision Controversy: An Anthropological Perspective, will make a public presentation on her research experiences April 21 at 7 p.m. in the Moon Room of Dana Auditorium.

During her visit to campus April 20-22, she will meet with classes to share information about her experiences living and studying culturally sensitive issues in African societies. The visit is sponsored by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the International Studies Program.

Gruenbaum is a professor of anthropology at California State University at Fresno. Her teaching interests are in the areas of cultural anthropology, gender studies, medical anthropology, Islamic cultures and the Middle East and Africa.

She has undertaken research on beauty pageants and HIV prevention in Botswana, as well as a longitudinal project on female genital cutting in Sudan where the most severe forms of this rite are common and where there is a social movement to abandon the practice.

One of the reviewers of her book, published 2001 by the University of Pennsylvania Press, said: “By presenting specific cultural contexts and human experiences with a deep knowledge of the tremendous variation of the practice and meaning of female circumcision, Gruenbaum provides an insightful analysis of the process of changing this complex, highly debated practice.”

A 5-8, 180-pound attackman, Miller totalled seven goals and nine assists for 16 points in the Quakers’ 1-2 week. He scored three goals and five assists in Guilford’s 14-12 March 28 win over Wittenberg, which ended the Quakers’ three-game losing streak. Miller had five ground balls in the win and netted an important insurance goal with 59 seconds left in the game. He had four goals and two assists the day before in Guilford’s 13-10 league loss to Randolph-Macon. Miller scored two assists and had two ground balls against Greensboro March 24.

His 17 goals stand second to teammate MATT WAGNER ’05 with 26 tallies.
