Campus Life Issues Safety Notice Regarding Access to Non-Residential Campus Buildings

PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE: ACCESS TO NON-ACADEMIC BUILDINGS

In an effort to accommodate the needs of and ensure the safety of faculty, staff and students (and their property) in non-residential buildings on campus, the Office of Public Safety needs to receive additional information regarding the opening and closing of buildings and individual spaces within those buildings. During the academic year, the following academic buildings will be unlocked at 7 a.m. and locked at 11 p.m. on weekdays: Hege-Cox, Archdale, Dana (excluding the auditorium), PE Center (closes at 9:00 p.m. on weekdays), Duke, King and Frank Family Science. Bauman’s exterior is open 24/7. The library is open Monday – Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 2 a.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Sunday, Noon – 2 a.m.

Please respond to
kelliot2@guilford.edu with the information for your department or area requested below. Where possible, discuss the needs of your department with one another and have the department chair or manager contact Public Safety with one request.

1. Faculty and staff should identify other areas within the building that need to be locked/unlocked on a different schedule (i.e., labs, classrooms with computers or other valuable equipment, etc.) As faculty alert Public Safety, they will either add those locations to the unlock schedule or ensure that staff have appropriate keys as necessary. Please indicate if this is a daily occurrence, or only at certain times. For special events, please be sure to contact Public Safety to ensure that the classroom is unlocked if it is not normally. If you have scheduled your event with GREG KEENER then he will notify Public Safety.

2. Faculty/staff should also e-mail kelliot2@guilford.edu with the names of students who are authorized by them to have access to academic buildings outside of regular hours. Access will be given with keys or card access as appropriate.

Richie Zweigenhaft Gives Talks Based on Recent Book

RICHIE ZWEIGENHAFT gave two talks this summer based on the recently published book that he co-authored with G. William Domhoff, Blacks in the White Elite: Will the Progress Continue? (Rowman & Littlefield, 2003). The first was to the men’s club at Friends Home. TED BENFEY (Dana Professor of Chemistry and History of Science Emeritus – 1973-88) introduced Zweigenhaft (and did so eloquently), and among those in the audience were former Guilford faculty members J. FLOYD “PETE” MOORE (Professor of Religious Studies Emeritus – 1944-84) and BOB KEENY (Voehringer Professor of Accounting Emeritus – 1977-88).

The second talk was the opening keynote address at the five-day Ninth Annual Cultural Diversity Institute for Administrators, Teachers and Trustees at the Milton Academy in Milton, Mass. (Again there was a Guilford connection, as among those in the audience were two teachers at Wilmington Friends School who are the parents of recent Guilford psychology graduate QUINN MAGUIRE ’02). The closing keynote address at the conference was by Beverly Daniel Tatum, the president of Spelman College and the author of Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?

Changes Announced in Direct Deposit for Wachovia Customers

Wachovia Bank Customers:

As a result of the Wachovia/First Union merger, your routing number and account number to transfer direct deposit funds into your account has changed to a First Union number. Wachovia Bank customers will now receive First Union routing and account numbers, which will result in payroll changes of routing and account numbers on all Wachovia bank accounts. Due to this change, you will receive an actual check on Sept. 2 instead of having your funds directly deposited. Please examine your payroll vouchers because an actual check will be enclosed. Your direct deposit will resume on Oct. 1.

If you have questions regarding this change, please contact any member of the Human Resources staff.

HAPPY LABOR DAY–Fri., Jan. 2, 2004, Declared as a Free Holiday

It is my pleasure to announce that Jan. 2, 2004, will be a “free holiday” for all regular employees. In recognition of the effort put forth over the last several months, New Year’s Weekend 2004 (Thurs., Jan. 1, through Sun., Jan. 4) will be a four-day weekend for everyone. This additional holiday will not replace an existing holiday, nor will it be charged as a floating holiday.

Staff Meeting Called for Sept. 3 in Founders Gallery Featuring Discussion Subcommittee on Community

There is a called staff meeting Wed., Sept. 3, at 1:45 p.m. in the Gallery of Founders Hall. The purpose is to update staff on the progress of SLRP over the summer and begin an important conversation with Subcommittee #3 on Community.

Staff are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting. Everyone feels time constraints at the opening of school, but given the deadlines SLRP needs to meet this year, this will be Subcommittee #3′s only opportunity to meet with staff. The overview of the meeting conversation is below:

As part of the ongoing development of a strategic long range plan, Guilford College’s core purpose statement is “developing leaders who change the world.” The third goal under this statement is to “make Guilford College a supportive and responsive community.”

The action statement of this goal is “to provide our students with a living example of a responsive and diverse community that demonstrates integrity in its actions, decides issues by consensus, eliminates individual and institutional racism, and recognizes and celebrates the exceptional contributions of its members.”

SLRP Subcommittee #3 on Community invites your input in the discussion of the above goal and action statement. Please consider these three questions:

1. What is Guilford College currently doing to support the goal areas?
2. What are the weaknesses? What do we need to do differently?
3. What are two objectives based on your answer to #2?

SLRP Subcommittee #3 on Community looks forward to our discussion of these questions with you. If you’d like to prepare some points to make in writing ahead of time to share at the meeting, that will facilitate the process. In advance, the subcommittee thanks you for your input.

Supervisors Asked to Support Employees in Participation in Community Activities

From time to time this academic year, administrative and support staff will be invited to participate in community activities during the working day. For example, there is a regular all-campus staff meeting on Wed., Sept. 3, from 1:45-2:45 p.m. in the Gallery. In addition, other staff members serve on the budget committee, benefits advisory committee, and strategic long range planning committee. The strategic long range planning committee may also ask for a modest amount of time to interview staff on crucial planning questions that are being addressed by four subcommittees: transformational education, community, social impact, and stewardship.

Clearly, we must ensure that no staff member becomes involved in too many of these activities and you are able to maintain departmental services for students and other community members. If those conditions can be met, and I know that they can be on most occasions, please encourage your staff to become involved in making Guilford a better place by attending all campus meetings and agreeing to serve on committees if asked.

Thanks.
