Kaczmarek Named Head Women’s Swimming Coach

STEVE KACZMAREK was appointed Guilford’s first head women’s swimming coach Dec. 29. Kaczmarek will rely on his 31 years of aquatics coaching and administration experience to implement one of the Quakers’ newest teams. The team is slated to begin competition in 2003-04, with full membership in the NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Kaczmarek serves as the Natatorium Supervisor and Aquatic Director for the Corpus Christi (Texas) Independent School District (CCISD), a position he has held since 2000. He oversees a natatorium staff of nine, including five swimming coaches and a diving coach, and coordinates the school district’s aquatics activities. In his tenure, the district has added competitive middle-school swimming programs and developed a district-wide Learn to Swim Program. Kaczmarek also serves as the director for regional, district and state championship meets.

Before assuming his administrative role, Kaczmarek coached high school teams in the CCISD from 1984-2000. When he arrived in 1984, he inherited a scholastic swimming program that consisted of seven swimmers. Over time he built the district’s program to where it now includes over 150 participants and a head swimming coach for each of the district’s five high schools. Kaczmarek received a regional coaching honor in 1990 for his work at Carroll High School and was considered for the Texas High School Swimming Coach of the Year Award in 1986. He received District Coach of the Year laurels from 1984-94 with his Carroll High School teams and from 1979-84 at Kingsville High School. Kaczmarek coached Miller High School’s team from 1994-2000.

A 1975 Texas Tech graduate, Kaczmarek worked with the school’s swimming team under longtime coach Jim McNally. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and health (curriculum and instruction) and took his first aquatics director position in Plains, Texas, in 1976. There he established a 60-person swimming program and the Plains High School swimming team. He served as a coach and aquatics director for the Kingsville (Texas) Independent School District from 1978-84. The Wichita Falls, Texas, native coached an All-American and 10 all-state swimmers in six seasons in Kingsville.

A member of San Antonio College’s swimming team from 1970-72, Kaczmarek has also coached extensively on the club level and spent 10 years on the Coastal Bend Aquatics staff in Corpus Christi until 1994. He is a member of the American Swimming Coaches Association and has a lifetime membership with the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association.

Guilford announced the addition of women’s swimming to its varsity sports lineup in October. The addition of women’s swimming, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, plus the reinstatement of men’s tennis, will give the Quakers 16 varsity sports beginning in the fall of 2004.

All people of faith are invited to join together in prayer on Wednesdays from 8-8:30 a.m. in the Boren Lounge beginning Jan. 7, 2004.

We intend to pray for healing within and between individuals as well as for the community, for strength and direction, for deeper connectedness and unity of purpose, to create a space where all we can live their faith in openness and freedom. We bring a multiplicity of faith backgrounds and experience and all have varying comfort levels with expressions of faith. It is time for us to come together in the One Source deeper than all our experiences.

Please join us!

Christian Adams ’05 Named Football All-American

CHRISTIAN ADAMS ’05 earned a spot on the College Sports Information Directors Division III All-America Football Team Dec. 17. Adams made the squad as a second-team punter and is Guilford’s first All-America selection since return specialist CHRIS MCKINNEY ’03 made the 2001 All-America unit. Adams becomes the Quakers’ first All-America punter since TONY SWAINEY ’75 received NAIA All-America honors in 1974.

Adams led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for the second straight season and ranks fourth in NCAA Division III with a team-record 41.6-yard average. He earned Second Team Football Gazette All-South Region and First Team All-ODAC honors this season. Adams placed 22 of 66 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line with four fair catches and three touchbacks. He kicked 13 punts of 50 or more yards and six of 60 yards or more, including a 76-yard boot against Ferrum, which ranks second in Guilford history. He averaged over 40 yards per kick in nine of 10 contests, including the Oct. 4 matchup with Greensboro where he averaged 45.1 yards on nine punts. Adams’ 41.6-yard average stands third in ODAC history and broke Guilford’s 39-year-old school record.

The 26th annual All-America team was selected by a panel of 30 sports information directors representing the four playoff regions in Division III. Voters made first-, second- and third-team selections with candidates receiving points on a 25-15-10 scale. In addition to the top three teams, players who received 110 or more points earned honorable mention status. The ballot included 321 players representing 130 of the 229 Division III football-playing institutions.

Guilford finished 2-8 and ranked sixth (1-5) among seven ODAC teams. The Quakers expect 52 letter winners back in 2004, including Adams.

Vice Presidents and Deans Meeting Digest for Nov. 11-Dec. 2 Published

Vice Presidents and Deans Meeting Digest
Nov. 11 and Dec. 2, 2003

The vice presidents and deans group advises the president. It is much like a “cabinet” of department heads that works with a president or governor. Unlike the former administrative council, it has no independent decision making authority.

Regular attendees are: Director of Institutional Research and Assessment JERRY BOOTHBY, Director of College Relations TY BUCKNER, President KENT CHABOTAR, Vice President for Enrollment and Campus Life RANDY DOSS ’82, Executive Assistant to the President JOYCE EATON, Associate Academic Dean JIM HOOD ’79, Director of Development ANNE HURD, Vice President and Academic Dean ADRIENNE ISRAEL, Dean for Campus Life ANNE LUNDQUIST, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer PHIL MANZ ’79, Vice President for Advancement CHARLIE PATTERSON, Dean for Center for Continuing Education BILL STEVENS and Associate Chief Financial Officer JIM VROOM.

This digest is one among many efforts to keep the community informed about collegiate decision making at all levels. Other efforts include the annual budget letter, open meetings about strategic planning and the budget, trustee meeting updates and the Beacon and Buzz. The digest will let employees and students know what topics the vice president and deans discussed with the president, and what action, if any, was taken. The following digest is drawn from the approved minutes of the Nov. 11 and Dec. 2 meetings. The digest will be provided on a regular basis throughout the academic year.

Nov. 11

Topics:

  • Campus situation involving student and FBI investigation update. Randy Doss indicated that NATHANIEL HEATWOLE ’05 waived his right in federal court to a Nov. 10 preliminary hearing. Attorney negotiations are in process
  • Core values for VP and Deans group presentation. A subcommittee including Anne Hurd, Ty Buckner, Jim Hood and CAROLYN BEARD WHITLOW presented a diagram articulating VP and Deans group core values of excellence, community, accountability, and integrity as well as statements of commitment. Creation of the diagram resulted from discussions at the group’s October retreat
  • Future retreat discussion. The group talked further about a follow up session to its October retreat, to be held locally in the new calendar year. It agreed in principle that it would continue with consultant Rod Napier, pending specific session details from Rod. The session would include an emphasis on the 360-degree feedback process.
  • Holds policy discussion. Jim Hood reviewed the final holds policy revisions as recommended by the Holds Task Force. After 30 days of non-payment of library and parking, the threshold for entering the judicial holds process has been set at $25 for library fines and $75 for parking fines. The Center for Continuing Education billing issues have been resolved. President Chabotar requested that “egregious offenses” be clarified, and examples of the same should be offered. He stated that this revised policy provides encouragement for timely resolutions of fines and holds by students and advances enforcement by the college in fair and systematic ways.
  • Budget process discussion. Budget Committee Chair RAYMOND JOHNSON reported to President Chabotar that neither the capital projects summary nor the vice presidential reductions in operating expenditures would be ready as scheduled for the Budget Committee meeting Nov. 13. If true, the president stated, these issues violate a promise to the Budget Committee, break faith with the community and are unacceptable. Jim Vroom, Jerry Boothby and others involved in providing budget materials committed to having information to the Budget Committee before its meeting.
  • Size of the college report. Randy Doss reported on a meeting with Jerry Boothby, Bill Stevens and ALICE STEWART for focused discussion on the college size issue that is being examined by the Strategic and Long Range Planning Committee. In addition to size of the college, other topics discussed were: student/faculty ratio, strengths and weaknesses of growth, capacity of classroom space, capacity of parking space, capacity of residence halls, upgrading and reconfiguring of residence halls, maintaining sense of community, residential campus/commuter issues and results of student satisfaction surveys. Stevens stressed the importance of confronting and discussing CCE enrollment issues in the near future. This sub-group is charged with recommending a total enrollment number, numbers for each of the student components, i.e., traditional, Center for Continuing Education and Early College, as well as recommended numbers of residential students and commuter students.

Actions:

The group sent the core values diagram back for modifications before final approval and publication to the community via the Beacon. The group asked President Chabotar to pursue a follow up session with Rod Napier in the new calendar year, and report back with details and proposed dates. The holds policy and guidelines were approved. The policies will then be transferred immediately into the Web edition of the Student Handbook and also be distributed via the Beacon.

Dec. 2

Topics:

  • Spring semester meeting time. Beginning Jan. 12, the VP and Deans group will meet each Monday from 10:30 a.m. until 12 noon.
  • Core values for VP and Deans group. The group took a final look at the core values diagram and discussed ways it intends to incorporate the commitments within its work.
  • Feedback regarding new campus publications. Ty Buckner reported feedback from faculty, staff, students and others about the recently released publications, “Where to Go? Whom to Contact?” “Myths and Facts” and “Who Gets to Decide?” He stated some suggestions have already been incorporated into these living documents, whereas others are being reviewed and are under consideration. Several complimentary messages have been received. The News & Record wrote a story about “Myths and Facts” which produced some reaction on campus. Suggestions offered by this group for possible revisions included: offering a fuller description of Guilford College, providing explanations as necessary to provide better clarification, re-checking historical sources regarding Underground Railroad statements and including comparative national data with local data as deemed necessary.
  • Military recruiting report. Anne Lundquist provided a brief summary on Guilford’s current practices regarding military recruiters on campus, as well as some comments about the Solomon Amendment and the relation of the same to federal financial aid funding. Jim Hood summarized his collection of comparative information from other colleges. Lundquist and Hood will further investigate and gather additional information regarding the process of applying for an exemption to the Solomon Amendment, as an exemption might allow the college the flexibility to have the advantage of choices.
  • Future retreat discussion. President Chabotar sought the group’s reactions to Rod Napier’s comments regarding additional training. He also asked if any additional information was needed before making a decision about future retreat(s) and training. The group indicated it needed some further explanations from Rod before making a decision about future sessions

Actions:

The group approved the core values document and agreed to implement commitments within the group and disseminate to the next level of administrators. The diagram and an explanatory paragraph written by President Chabotar will be distributed via the Beacon Dec. 5. Regarding military recruiting, the group decided to maintain the college’s current practices of allowing military recruiting on campus, with arrangements being coordinated by IRENE HARRINGTON, director of career development. Simultaneously, the college will continue its practice of providing peace testimony opportunities and will continue its compliance with the Solomon Amendment in order to ensure the availability of federal financial aid funding.
